FG set to end 75% annual tomato waste

The federal government has said plans are underway to end the 75 per cent wastage annually recorded in tomato production in Nigeria.
According to FG, this would be achieved through the implementation of new policies that would boost local production and processing.
The government spoke through the Minister of State for Trade, Hajiya A’isha Abubakar, recently. She said that new policies to enhance farm produce storage and were underway. She said that the ministry was working on policies to boost local processing of tomato and other perishable products.
Abubakar inspected facilities at the Erisco company which has an installed tomato production capacity of 450,000 metric tonnes per annum, according to Erisco Chairman, Chief Eric Umeofia.
She stated that the current administration of President Muhammad Buhari was committed to encouraging local manufacturing and promoting local content in line with its agenda to diversify the economy.
