OxfamOxfam with the support of the European Union has commenced the distribution of dry season farming inputs to farmers in Kebbi State to enhance food security and improve livelihoods of small holder farmers.
Strategic linkage of smallholder farmers to farming inputs such as fertilisers and pumping machines was part of the several components of the Pro Resilience Action (PROACT) Project, an EU Support to Food Security and Resilience in Northern Nigeria.
Spokesman of Oxfam Nigeria Kunle Olawoyin said in a statement that 6000 bags of fertilizers are being distributed to 1500 farmers and 400 surface irrigation water pumps to over 62 farmers groups for the 2017 dry season farming activities.

At the flag off ceremony in Birni Kebbi, the Kebbi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Mohammed Dandiga implored the beneficiaries to make good use of the inputs provided to them for the intended purposes only and thereby improve their productivity.
He said that they should count themselves worthy to have benefited from such a life improving project that is centred on harnessing the potentials of smallholder farmers in ensuring food security across Nigeria.
"You are not the only dry season farmers in the state but you are privileged to be among the selected to benefit from this gesture. That is why it is important for you to keep to all the rules and ensure you fulfill your own side of the commitment so that other farmers will benefit as well. We express our gratitude to Oxfam for selecting Kebbi State for the Project," Dandiga said.
Also, the Programme Manager, Kebbi State Agriculture and Rural Development Authority (KARDA), Mallam Sanusi Illo, said the distribution of the inputs to the farmers was timely and strategic.

He said that smallholder farmers have been sitting on abundance resources but lack institutional supports, new knowledge and skills to explore the potentials around them.
"We have enough farmland to farm but we are ignorant of how to do it in such away to be more productive in terms of new technology and best farming practice so we are sleeping with hunger due to our ignorance. We thank God for Oxfam and the European Union for coming to our rescue," he said.
Livelihood and Private Sector Manager, Oxfam, William Mafwalal said the project is supporting Kebbi State Government in its efforts towards improving agricultural productivity, enhancing food security and reducing poverty especially among Small Holder Farmers in rural communities.
"This is just the beginning of the full implementation of the project. It is a four-year intervention with lots of components all aimed at fight hunger and builds the resilience of farmers," he said.
