Kashim Shettima of Borno 696x391Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State on Monday, flagged off sales and distribution of 24 trucks of assorted bags of fertilizer to farmers at subsidized rate in Sourthern Borno Senatorial District.
The 24 trucks is the first consignment from the state government for this year’s cropping season, as the ceremony took place in Briyel, the Headquarters of Bayo Local Government Area.
Shettima, however, warned that anyone found diverting the products from farmers for selfish interest should be prepared to face full wrath of the law.
The ceremony took place at Secretariat Complex of Bayo Local Government Area, where beneficiaries described the gesture as timely.
The governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Hon. Usman Mamman Durkwa said the State Government procured NPK fertilizer to be sold at subsidized rate of N3,500 per bag, instead of N8,000 in an open market.
He reiterated that Council Chairman or any official found frustrating the gesture either through diversion or conniving with marketers to sell the product at an exorbitant price more than the government fixed price, should not be spared from facing the law.
Durkwa said that the gesture would cover 9 Local Government Areas in Southern part, including relatively peaceful three Council Areas of Northern Borno Senatorial District.
He said the procurement and selling of the fertilizers at a highly subsidized rate demonstrated government determination for agricultural development to uplift standard of living of the people in the state.
He pointed out that Governor Shettima throughout the period under review of his stewardship, has invested about N40 billion in procurment of agricultural machineries towards mechanized farming, in addition provision of 20 metric tons of Super Sosat Millet Seeds, 10 metric tons of Sesame (Beniseeds), 28 metric tons of Faro 44 Rice Seeds and 8 metric tons of Groundnut seeds to farmers across the state.
Apart from these, Durkwa said government had also recieved donation of assorted improved seed varieties comprising of Cowpea, Maize, Rice, Sorghum from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), which had since been distributed to farmers across the 27 Council Areas.
Responding, the Caretaker Chairman of Bayo, Hon. Maigari Abali thanked the state government for choosing Bayo to flag off this year fertilizer sales and distribution, which he described as timely.
He assured that the items will be sold and distributed at the government subsidized price judiciously to all people, irrespective of political considerations.
